Behind this invasive (albeit protected) mute swan, you'll see a frozen surface. Surface temps in this brackish waterbody are now below freezing. The remaining population of Atlantic Menhaden is experiencing cold shock, causing these fish to die off one by one. You'll witness the same fish kill occurring in many Long Island waters right now.
You'll most often see these swans eating vegetation, although they're known to ingest small fish and aquatic animals. It felt unusual to see one eating a foot-long bunker!
