Don’t get ripped off!! 🫠 NEVER exchange your money at the airport, unless you realllly have to.. this goes for any country, not just Japan 🇯🇵 There are all sorts of fees (like super high commission fees) and the exchange rate isn’t the best.. sometimes is awful! You’re better off using a local ATM if you can find one, BUT I have another travel tip:
Get a Schwab investor checking account! (Not sponsored, just wanted to share this resource) They’re free to set up and there are no monthly fees, no minimum balance requirements, no foreign transaction fees, and every ATM fee will be reimbursed!
You can easily find an ATM machine inside any 7-Eleven all over Japan, and the interface is really easy to use and has multiple language options. Just make sure to use the local currency instead of USD. There will be an ATM fee on your receipt, but Schwab will reimburse it pretty quickly.
Sometimes it takes a few days for money to be transferred from your usual bank account into your Schwab account, so make sure you have enough in the Schwab checking account before you fly to your destination and try to withdraw cash.
Since you’ll already be in a 7-Eleven, might as well get some snacks before you head out 🍙 😋
