A day trip to a beautiful white-washed village of Spain will top your trip to Malaga. Reach a white village in as little as 20 minutes from Malaga and Marbella on the Costa del Sol to marvel at Andalucia pueblo life. Ronda lies on a fertile plain. Mijas Pueblo and Ojén sit up high in the foothills above the Costa del Sol. Estepona sparkles next to the beach.
MIJAS PUEBLO. Come for a walk through the winding, narrow streets of this white-washed village, the closest to Málaga. In the video, we began with a walk from one of the beautiful squares along the cliff-edged park at the edge of the pueblo. There you can see a wide swath of the Costa del Sol from up high. The oval shaped bullring sits next to the church. The bullring longer hosts bullfights, but you can visit the ring on your own and visit all the seat sections. Tickets in the shade used to cost more than a ticket in the sun. Have a seat in the special box for the president. Afterwards, wander through the town again, maybe stopping at one of the bars or restaurants for tapas or a sunny meal. Our favorite shops were the local butcher and the artisan shop at the edge of town.
RONDA. Ronda is about an hour’s drive from Marbella, reached on an exhilarating drive up a steep and curvy mountain road. We recommend parking outside the city wall at Plaza San Francisco. Have a tapas and then continue into the city on foot through the old wall. Ronda’s old town is the most beautiful section with both cute alleys and churches and grand plazas and historical buildings. The old town ends at the bridge over the gorge. On the other side of the bridge lies the Parador and the new section of the village. Even the new section has beautiful white-washed buildings and lovely pastoral vistas as long as you stay away from the hotel and shopping streets. From the old section of town next to Plaza Mária Auxiliadora, take the footpath down the canyon to the lookout. From here you look up to the village for your Instagram photo. If you arrive in the winter the orange trees will be bursting with fruit. Del Califa Ronda makes the best orange juice with just a hint of bitter rind served fresh-squeezed under the tree in a mini patio next to a tiled shrine.
ESTEPONA. You’ll need to hunt for the old pueblo because it’s tucked behind the seafront promenade out of view. Look for the old church tower as your compass to find it. Lovely Estepona hugs the sea, fifteen minutes west of Marbella in the direction of Gibraltar. Lunch on the sand is a great way to start before you explore the white-washed pueblo.
OJÉN. A short 15 minutes drive up the hill from Marbella. There’s a lookout before the village for a great panorama photo. Arabic names and Moorish architecture permeate the maze of delightful alleys. Here we catch a glimpse of pueblo life with friends and family gathering in the main square on a Sunday afternoon before we wander.
