Lefkada (Lefkas) town is the capital and lies on the northeast coast of Lefkada island. It is linked to the mainland by a swing bridge. Lefkas town is a charming, lively, typical Greek town. Each house was built very close to the other, surrounded by narrow pedestrian alleys that create a lovely and unique setting. A small square full of verdant trees at the harbour entrance gives the town a cheerful and pleasant atmosphere. On the other side is the central square of the town, called Agios Spyridon, which owns its name to the 17th-century church that stands on the square. The main shopping street of Lefkada (Lefkas) is pedestrianised and runs from the central square to the port, with plenty of tavernas and bars clustered near the harbour end. Some interesting sites are scattered around the town, like the Public Library, the Archaeological Museum located on Faneromeni Street, which houses finds from various excavations in the island's archaeological sites, the Gramophone Museum and the Folklore Museum. There are several churches in Lefkada (Lefkas) town that are interesting in some way, such as the 18th-century church of Agios Nikolaos, the 17th-century church of Agios Dimitrios, the 18th-century church of Pantokrator and the church of the Presentation of the Virgin.
