박순애 '만 5세 초등입학, 교육격차 해소 위한 수단일뿐'... 폐기가능하다
The Education Ministry's plans to lower the elementary school entry age was met with severe criticism from various sectors including parents.
In response it was emphasized that the policy is at the beginning phase,... and that the government will turn to public and experts in the field before making decisions.
Kim Bo-kyoung has the full story.
Following strong objection to the proposed idea of lowering the elementary school entry age from six to five,... South Korea's education minister reiterates that a decision will only be made after careful consideration.
During a meeting on Wednesday with education superintendents nationwide,... minister Park Soon-ae said the proposal was initially aimed at making sure the country can close the education gap by offering public education to young children.
She added that the proposal was just one of many ways to reach that goal.
This reaffirms what she previously said that the ministry will listen to public opinion,... and if necessary, withdraw the proposal.
"If people say this policy is really not the right one then I believe it can be discarded. How could we proceed with a policy nobody wants?"
Park previously said the new policy would be gradually enforced over a period of four years,... starting in 2025.. but later said over 12 years could also be possible.
But that was met with more backlash from parents and experts in the education sector.
They raised concerns over school budgeting, not taking into consideration the development stages of children,... and possibility that it would lead to parents spending more money on private education.
"There aren't any measures for how the ministry is going to deal with overwhelming demand to take care of children... which isn't solved even now. Those households that cannot use after-school daycare programs would have to turn to private education."
To this,... President Yoon Suk-yeol on Tuesday ordered the Education Ministry to swiftly push for public discussion on the matter.
He also requested it to play a facilitator role so that bipartisan discussion can take place in National Assembly.
