Now that you have all your tools and materials ready, let's get into it…
First thing first, let's get to know our enemy. These little buggers, also known as 'pincher bugs', love to hide in dark, damp places during the day and come out at night to feast on your plants and sometimes sneak into your homes. Creepy, isn't it?
But don’t worry! Because I've got a battle plan ready for you based on years of scientific research and tried-and-tested methods. A 2016 study from the University of California's Statewide Integrated Pest Management Program - quite a mouthful, isn't it? - helps us understand earwigs better and gives us useful insights on controlling them. So, you ready? Let's dive right in!
The first line of defense is cleaning. Tidy up your yard, clear the debris, prune the plants. Earwigs love clutter, so let's not give them that luxury!
You know what earwigs hate? Diatomaceous earth! It's a white powder made from the fossilized remains of tiny, aquatic organisms. It can be brutal for these earwigs, but it's harmless for us and our pets. Sprinkle it around the foundation of your house, in your garden, and in other infested areas.
Soapy water in a spray bottle - easy peasy, isn't it? According to Dr. Michael Merchant from Texas A&M University's AgriLife Extension Service, in an article he published in 2018, soapy water can actually drown earwigs. So, spray it in your garden and other spots where you think these little invaders might be hiding.
Remember the traps I included in the things you need? Yeah, these work like a charm. You can buy them or make one at home using damp newspaper, oil, or soy sauce. Leave these traps out at night, and in the morning, you'll find these unwanted guests trapped. Take them far away, and voila!
When things get real tough, we have boric acid. But remember, it's a strong chemical and should be handled with care. Sprinkle it around the earwig-infested areas and let it do its magic.
And if everything else fails, call a professional exterminator, who would likely use a professional-grade insecticide.
