Annie McCarrick was born on March 27, 1966 and was raised in Bayport, Long Island, New York. An only daughter of parents of Irish descent, she grew up with a love and appreciation of Irish culture. She particularly enjoyed traditional music. After visiting the island of ireland on a school tour, she enrolled as a student in Maynooth and would stay in ireland for a couple of years before returning to the US. a few years later annie decided that she wanted to return to Ireland.

She arrived back in Ireland in January 1993 and initially stayed with the brother of her ex-boyfriend and his fiancée, Hillary and Rita, who were good friends. Before long, she found a room in a shared flat in the upmarket Sandymount area of Dublin's south-side. She found a job at a restaurant first, then switched to working in Café Java on Leeson Street. Annie finished her shift there on Thursday, March 25, She was due to work again on Saturday, March 27. Annie did not turn up for work on the Saturday.

The last confirmed sighting of her was on the Friday afternoon, on a bus bound for the village of Enniskerry in County Wicklow. Enniskerry is a quaint village in the Dublin-Wicklow Mountains where she enjoyed walking. She has not been seen since and no trace of her has ever been found. She was aged 26. She disappeared the day before her 27th birthday.
