Watch Phil Withers, regius professor of material science at the University of Manchester talk about the work of the prosperity partnership between the university and BP.

The two have got together to tackle corrosion, which costs over 2 trillion a year and leads to all sorts of unexpected failures. Not only has corrosion been identified as a major concern, it is also an area where science can have a significant impact.

The first stage of their work will use advanced technology and techniques to look at and understand what causes corrosion, and then build upon that in the second stage to develop smart coatings and films that can counteract and prevent it.
