15 Most UNIQUE Lions Around The World!
Lions are amazing, majestic creatures. But for the longest time, I thought they were just that; lions. Little
did I know that there are quite a few unique species and subspecies of this big cat. Today. We’ll be
talking about 15 of the most unique lions in the world. Number one is so rare or so unique, no one has
seen them in years, not even a photograph. Stay tuned to find out what it is.
Southwest African Lion
This subspecies of lion is endemic to Southwest Africa. It is found in the Democratic Republic of the
Congo, Angola, Namibia, the western sections of Zambia and Zimbabwe, and the northern regions of
Botswana. This lion is unique because of something very unfortunate; they are classified as critically
endangered.
The Southwest African Lion is one of the largest lion subspecies to be found today. Fully matured adult
males are usually around 8.2 to 9.8 feet long. The females are a bit smaller, at 7.5 to 8.5 feet. Male cubs
average around 170 pounds in weight, and females tend to weigh 20% less than males. Adult male
weights around 309-534 pounds while the females weigh between 231 and 375 pounds. They have a
shoulder height of around 3 to 4 feet when standing on all fours.
Masai Lion
The Masai lion, also called the East African lion, is a lion subspecies that is found in eastern Africa. They
are unique from other lion species by their unusually longer legs and less curved backs compared to
other lion subspecies. Also, aside from their glorious manes which look like they were combed
backwards, males have moderate tufts of hair on the knee joint. Male East African lions are generally
8.2–9.8 feet long including the tail. Lionesses are generally smaller, at only 7.5–8.5 feet.
The development of the manes of the Masai lions are related to age. Older males have more extensive
manes than younger ones; and manes continue to grow up to the age of four to five years, long after the
males have become sexually mature.
Asiatic Lion
There are only several hundred Asiatic lions in the wild, yet another instance when uniqueness equates
to rarity. Today, they only live in the Gir Forest, India, in an area that is smaller than Greater London. In
the past, they used to range from Turkey, across Asia, to eastern India, but the rise of firearms across
the world meant that they were hunted to near-extinction for sport.
Asian lions are slightly smaller than African lions. They are also quite unique from their African
counterparts because the males do not tend to live with the females of their pride unless they’re mating
or have a large kill. The most distinguishing characteristic of the Asiatic lion is the longitudinal fold of
skin that runs along its belly, which is absent in their African cousins.
Today, the remaining wild lions are vulnerable to disease, disaster and potential poaching, and have to
live alongside a growing human population that also needs the land for cattle and crops.
Ishasha Lion
It is somewhat uncommon for lions to actually climb trees, but some actually do. There are 2
populations in whole world of such lions that do actually climb trees as one of their day after day
behavior. One of these populations is found within the Ishasha sector which is found in the south part of
the well-known Queen Elizabeth National Park within Uganda.
It is thought that the Ishasha lions climb trees as a way of protecting themselves against the numerous
biting tsetse flies on the ground level, whereas other people claim the they actually climb into the
branches to escape from the heat on the ground and enjoy the cool breeze; nonetheless the reason why
they climb up into the tree branches remains unknown.
Transvaal Lion
The Transvaal lion is a subspecies of lion that is also known as the Southeastern lion, because they
mainly live in southern parts of Africa. Their social structure is the largest compared to other lions.
Males usually protect their tribe and females are hunters.
It is named after the Transvaal region in South Africa. The male usually has a well-developed mane.
Most of them are black-maned as well. Males are around 8.5–10.5 ft long including the tail. Females are
7.7–9.0 ft. Generally, the weight of males is 330–550 lbs, while the females are 243–401 lbs. They have a
shoulder height of 3.0–4.0 ft. It is a very popular lion subspecies.
