In this video Andrew Matheson, Specialist Therapeutic Optometrist, explains a revolutionary and exciting new treatment for Dry Eye, Blepharitis and Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD).
This is called IPL (Intense Pulsed Light Therapy). Very bright flashes of red light of an appropriate wavelength are pulsed through the patients eyelids, cheeks and nose. Eye protection is worn by the patient and clinician. Red light stimulates the mitochondria within the eyelid tear secretion glands by a process called Photo-Biomodulation. This energises the glands and enables them to secrete better tear lipids.
IPL also reduces inflammation by various means, melts solidified meibomian waxes and reduces colonisation of the meibomian glands by Demodex Mites and Bacteria. Additional cosmetic benefits can include reduction in wrinkles and unwanted facial hair as well as dermatology conditions such as Rosacea.
IPL is available at all four Matheson Optometrists practices based in Hampshire, UK in Alresford, Grayshott Four Marks and Portchester. Please see the Matheson Optometrists website for further details:
