On this day in 1911, 146 garment workers died in a fire at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory in New York City, NY. Firefighters watched helplessly as their ladders were unable to reach the men and women trapped on the building’s top floors. The tragedy remains the deadliest industrial disaster in New York City's history.
Of the 146 dead, 123 were women. They included: Catherine Maltese (age 39) who immigrated to the United States with her children in 1907; Mary Floresta (age 26) who left behind a husband and 3-year-
old daughter; Bertha Kula (age 19), an Austrian immigrant who lived with her brother's family on Lower Manhattan's 4th Street; and Bessie Dashefsky, (age 25), a Russian immigrant who studied hard to become first in her family to speak English.
