The agricultural sector is considered one of the most hazardous industries, where workers face significant risks and accidents in Lebanon and globally.
Occupational safety and health (OSH) hazards can be physical, chemical, biological, and more.
In Lebanon, OSH remains marginalized and a low priority.
This initiative aims to raise awareness of OSH in agriculture among farmers and agricultural workers to create decent working conditions and reduce risks. It follows a study conducted by the International Labour Organization (ILO) in 2021, which involved farmers and agricultural workers to understand the realities of OSH in agriculture and identify solutions for improvement.
As part of ILO PROSPECTS, the agency collaborated with the the Rene Moawad Foundation (RMF) to implement a three-month programme, training 100 farmers and 300 workers from Akkar and Bekaa on OSH practices using the ILO’s Agricultural Safety and Health Guide. Farmers were selected from various regions, with diverse agricultural practices and scales.
Upon completing the training, farmers and workers received tools to enhance OSH during fieldwork, helping them mitigate specific risks.
