A number of European leaders landed in Malta on Friday afternoon for the Med9 summit which is expected to be dominated by talks on migrations.
A joint declaration is expected to be published later today if all member states agree with the wording and spirit of the statement.
European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen as well as Italian prime minister Giorgia Meloni and French president Emmanuel Macron are among the leaders who will be participating in the summit which will also focus on the war in Ukraine, climate change, human trafficking and organised crime on a European level.
But the main bone of contention for the heads of government of the southern EU states remains migration, with leaders so far unable to agree on a common EU policy.
This is Italian far-right premier Giorgia Meloni first visit to Malta after becoming Italy’s first woman prime minister in October 2022.
