If your character is hungry, you'll have to go out in search of food. Going outside has different risks, the first of which is air pollution. You'll have to build protective elements that allow your character to move around relatively freely in an increasingly hostile world.

As you leave your shelter in search of resources, you'll discover that, as is often the case in this type of setting, the greatest enemy to humanity is not pollution or radiation but people themselves, who plunder and kill for their own benefit. So you must remain on your guard while trying to stay safe to survive another day.
