“In this video, I’m performing the trikala jathi from the Roopamo Joochi varnam, a beautiful and intricate piece set in the Thodi ragam. The trikala jathi is one of the highlights of this varnam, as it demonstrates the dancer’s ability to move through three distinct tempos—slow, medium, and fast.
We begin with the slow tempo, where every movement is deliberate and precise, mirroring the serious and devotional mood of the Thodi ragam. As the jathi progresses to the medium tempo, the rhythm picks up, and the footwork becomes more complex, yet it retains the grace and emotional depth of the slow pace. Finally, in the fast tempo, the challenge lies in maintaining sharpness and agility while staying perfectly in sync with the rhythm. This progression not only showcases technical skill but also enhances the emotional intensity of the varnam, making the trikala jathi a truly powerful element in the performance.”
