This year 2022, the 72 Stock turns 50 years old.
A Compilation of clips of 1972 Stock.
Ah yes, the 1972 Stock on the Bakerloo Line. Yes Those bouncy trains, screechy wheels, doors that slam when closing, lights flickering and sometimes hot and sweltering too.
Well they’re fifty years old.. get over it!
I have to say these trains have a certain uniqueness about them. Even though they were refurbished in the 1990s and again in 2016, they still have some retro esque to them. Lights do go out over power gaps but it’s part of the experience. The 72TS are the last with Traverse seating, something that’s not common on tube services since the 1967 stock on the Victoria Line.
I know some people hate them but I really like them.
- Brief History -
The 1972 Stock that operates on the London Underground. These trains were order in a rush due to a lack of services on the Northern Line. These were heavily based on the 1967 Stock that is used on the then new Victoria Line. The 72’s were ordered in two batches, Mark I and Mark II. However, although externally similar they had differences. The mark I had guard controls (two person) and the Mark II was OPO (one person operation). Neither versions had ATO like the Vic stock.
The 1972 Mark I had operated on the Northern Line for most of its life until most of the units were withdrawn from service in the 90s. Some of the cars made it onto the Bakerloo Line.
The 1972 Mark II had actually operated on the northern line for a short while before being transferred to the Bakerloo Line. This would later become the Jubilee line.
