The youngest Nobel Prize winner ever defied the Taliban
and is a fervent activist for global education.
Malala Yousafzai was born in Pakistan in 1997.
She grew up in Swat Valley where the Taliban took control in 2007.
In December 2008, the Taliban bans girls from going to school
Aged 11, Malala begins to blog for the BBC about life under the Taliban.
Malala bravely publicly campaigns for girls to go to school
and wins Pakistan’s first National Youth Peace Prize
She gains international prominence due to her activism
and the Taliban targets her in 2012,
shooting her in the head, neck and shoulder….
Miraculously, Malala recovers after multiple surgeries.
She continues rehabilitation for months in a UK hospital
as she feared further retaliation from the Taliban.
On her sixteenth birthday, Malala delivers a powerful speech at the United Nations
to call for worldwide access to education.
“Let us pick up our books and our pens…
They are our most powerful weapons!”
It is her first public speech since she was targeted.
The UN declares July 12th as Malala Day
to honor the young activist’s commitment to education.
“Malala day, is not my day.
Today is the day of every woman, every boy and every girl
Who have raised their voice for their rights”
Malala and her father Ziauddin set up the Malala fund,
an organization that is dedicated to give all girls
access to education.
In 2014, she wins the Nobel Peace Prize,
becoming the youngest Nobel laureate ever
On her 18th birthday, she opens a secondary school
for Syrian refugee girls in Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley.
And on her 19th birthday, she meets with refugee girls
living in camps in Kenya and Rwanda.
In April 2017, Malala becomes UN messenger of Peace
and kicked off her #GirlPowerTrip
to meet with girls and fight for their futures.
In six months, she visits 130 million girls in 4 continents.
Malala has received over 40 awards and honors for her bravery and activism.
She recently began studying at Oxford University
and continues the fight for education worldwide.
