It’s a remarkable claim, but today’s scientists are convinced that everything we have ever observed, stars, planets, ourselves - everything! - constitutes but a small fraction of the Universe. How on earth (and beyond!) can they have come to this conclusion? What might be ‘out there’? And how might we finally see it? Welcome to the search for dark matter.
Presented by: Professor Alex Murphy, Professor of Nuclear and Particle Astrophysics, University of Edinburgh
Professor Murphy is a nuclear and particle astrophysicist at the University of Edinburgh, interested in the origin and nature of matter in the Universe. He obtained his BSc and PhD from the University of Birmingham and spent five years as a postdoctoral researcher in the US before returning to the UK as a lecturer at the University of Edinburgh, progressing to reader and then professor. His research includes the experimental and computational determination of the most important nuclear reactions involved in stellar explosions, and the direct search for dark matter in deep underground laboratories.
