In Russia’s “first dispatch of mobilized citizens,” more than 600 military reservists were sent to the Crimean Peninsula for training, the Ministry of Defense of Russia said on Tuesday, September 27.
President Vladimir Putin announced a partial mobilization of Russia’s military reserves on Wednesday, September 21, amid Ukrainian territorial gains in the war Russia started in February.
The announcement prompted anti-mobilization protests throughout Russia. OVD-Info, an independent human rights media project in Russia, reported that more than 2,000 people were detained across dozens of cities in protests since September 21.
Reports showed long lines of traffic at the border between Russia and Georgia after the announcement. Russian officials said on September 24 that there were approximately 2,300 vehicles waiting to exit the country at one border checkpoint.
Video posted by the Ministry of Defense of Russia on Tuesday shows military officials and community members at a “dispatch ceremony” for the “mobilized citizens” in Sevastopol.
