(28 Oct 2013) Indigenous women from around the globe gathered in Lima on Monday at the Global Indigenous Women's Conference to address issues important to these communities.
"Certainly, as indigenous women here, we all have come together to bring our voices together in a collective way to share what's happening in our communities but also to ensure that our voices are being heard," explained Alyssa Macy, a Native American woman from Oregon in the US.
About 200 participants will seek to develop proposals for the United Nations' conference on population and development in Cairo in 2014 and Beijing in 2015.
The women's conference runs until Wednesday.
Participants will also seek to form a committee to ensure the active participation of indigenous women in development in their respective countries.
"We're worried because there are a lot of threats against our peoples, threats from extractive industries, threats because we're being expelled from our territories, threats because the high rate of maternal mortality still persists," said Mirca Cunningham, an indigenous woman from Nicaragua.
