The world is in a race between finding enough clean energy to run the world, or ... dealing with catastrophic climate change.
At the 12th Singapore International Energy Week, which was held from 29th October to 1st November, at the Marina Bay Sands Convention Centre, the overarching tone of the conference was the transition from fossil fuels for energy production, towards using clean sources. Today, one third of energy is already from renewable sources. But is this pace of adoption fast enough to avoid a bleak future?
Among the highlights were Singapore Minister for Trade and Industry, Chan Chun Sing, who announced the nation's plan to go big on solar, backed up by clean gas, developing a regional power grid, and exploring new emerging technogies, as the energy plan for the next 50 years.
The International Energy Agency also launched its outlook for Southeast Asia, which makes for somber reading. The good news is that by 2040, one third of the increase in demand will be met by renewable sources. The bad news is by then the massive reliance on fossil fuels will require US$300 billion to pay for it. A year. And costs 650,000 deaths from air pollution and other causes. A year.

In general, while many countries across the world are embarking on aggressive plans away from fossil fuels, the question remains whether the pace of the transition will be fast enough. THe videos to follow will elaborate on these plans and views.
Singapore International Energy Week will return in October 2020.
