Starting a vineyard from scratch - Our vineyard is now a year old and we are getting ready for its second year. What are we doing to get it prepared for this important year?
Our vines have survived their first winter. Although quite a mild winter by recent standards, we have still had frost and a smattering of snow. Winter gales and everything else the British weather brings.
Before the vines have really woken up, now is an ideal time to give them some attention. Some vines have not done well over the last year, so we have replanted these in deeper wider holes. The rows have been weedkillered so that the grass is not competing with our young vines and we've cut the grass too.
We've been busy putting in the catch wires too, although these have yet to be tensioned up.
We should notice our vines wake up in the next couple of weeks as we head into April.
