There's one specific version of Gibson's ES-345 model that I think is the most important for a guitar collector to add to their arsenal: Cherry Red (Watermelon version), long pickguard, and factory stop bar tailpiece. But Gibson only made this version for a very short time: a handful in 1959 and less than 300 in 1960. By early 1961, the long pickguard was shortened and the Cherry Red hue had darkened a bit. The Cherry/long guard/stop tail ES-345 from the Kalamazoo factory was no longer in production, but at least one example made its way to my favorite of the three Kings: Freddie!
My guitar collecting colleague Walter and I purchased this clean 1960 Gibson ES-345 with full Freddie spec directly from its original owner only a few weeks ago in Madison, Alabama. As a boy, he idolized Elvis, so naturally he wanted to play the guitar. He never became the professional musician he dreamed to be, so the ES-345 went back into its case for decades. It's perfectly preserved and still has the mummy fingers intact! So please forgive me for not including a playing section of this video. I'm too afraid that the tuner buttons will crumble when we tune it.
If you're interested in this guitar and would rather have it playable, never fear! We can remove the original intact tuners and install an exact reproduction set with not extra holes or evidence. You can always reinstall the original tuners if you'd like.
