Hold your ground at all costs! In this episode we explore Oak Ridge and follow in the footsteps of a Maine regiment that was sacrificed to allow nearly 16,000 Union soldiers to retreat and fight another day. This regiment is the 16th Maine and they were commanded by Colonel Charles W. Tilden. The 16th Maine held their ground as long as they could before pulling back to a nearby railroad cut. The remaining members of the 16th Maine began to tear their colors into pieces to avoid disgracing their unit and in doing this, they deprived the CSA forces of capturing the flags of the United States and the regiment.
