Tom Brake is the director of Unlock Democracy, the successor organisation of Charter 88.
He was a Liberal Democrat Member of Parliament for over 20 years as well as a local councillor for Hackney and Sutton in Greater London.
Tom gives us a pitch in favour of changing to Proportional Representation for national elections in the UK. He says that PR would be transformational for the UK, which is currently held back by the First Past The Post or FPTP system.
Governments elected through PR tend to be better at continuity, FPTP leads to short-term thinking, he says.
He outlines the many benefits of PR. It is a fair and just system. It is popular. A majority of citizens now support it, including the majority of Labour members.
