Are you wondering how many fertilized eggs make it to day 5, that is the blastocyst stage?
To answer how many fertilized eggs actually make it to day 5, lets have a look at some key facts:
• On average fertilization rates are 50-80%
• From the eggs that do fertilize, 95% are able to progress further, that is are able to undergo division which is called the cleavage stage.
• Advancing from the cleavage stage, approximately 50% are able to reach blastocyst stage of day 5.
To illustrate this point, lets take a look at a diagram:
Lets say 10 mature eggs were collected form which 80% fertilized, so this gives us 8 fertilized eggs.
Normally 95% would undergo further division, but to keep this example simple, lets suppose all 8 undergo subsequent division.
So from 8 dividing embryos about 50% would be able to reach blastocyst stage on day 5, which means 4 embryos will make it to the blastocyst stage.
So the short answer being that about 50% of normally fertilized eggs would be able to reach blastocyst stage on day 5 of embryo development.
However, do bear in mind these are average numbers and this may vary depending on factors such as the patient’s age and infertility diagnosis.
