INTRO: The Interplast team from Australia and New Zealand will visit Mahosot Hospital in Vientiane from February 9-20 to provide plastic and reconstructive surgical services and training in the areas of burns management and treatment.
STORY: The Interplast medical team includes surgeons, anaesthetists and nurses. They will conduct a free consultation clinic for patients who have burns injury and/or scarring at Mahosot Hospital on Monday February 9, with surgeries performed from Tuesday February 10 until Thursday February 19.
The annual Interplast visit to Vientiane now focuses on burns management and treatment, where Interplast works closely with Lao surgeons, anaesthetists and allied health workers to improve access to appropriate management of burn injuries for Lao patients.
Mahosot Hospital is the primary government hospital in Vientiane. Doctors at this hospital are the most experienced and qualified in Laos and they maintain the best international standards in providing medical care.
About 100 doctors and 200 nurses graduate from medical schools and universities in Laos every year. Staff also provide medical help throughout the country. Although there are many hospitals in Vientiane, Mahosot Hospital is considered one of the best.
Interplast's long-term objectives are to improve the quality of life of people living with disability as a result of congenital or acquired medical conditions and to increase their access to local health systems. Interplast began programmes in Laos in 1995 in cooperation with the Ministry of Health, initially focusing on cleft lip and palate training.
