Renowned as an importer of cut-priced EV, Chinese mega-brand BYD aims squarely at the likes of Toyota RAV4 with its new value-laden Sealion 6 plug-in hybrid midsize SUV in the Aussie market.
While the newcomer entices with the turbo-fed all-wheel-drive Premium variant ($52,990), our test subject is the buck-banging entry Dynamic version, with natural aspiration, front drive and a super-keen $48,990 list price tag.
Unlike rivals such as RAV4, Honda’s CR-V and Hyundai’s Tucson, the Sealion 6 offers up to 80km of EV-like all-electric drive range, while undercutting all of its logical petrol-electric competitors by a fair margin.
But the big lure is equipment, and lots of it for the sub-$50K ask. But is there quality in the experience to back it up? Chasing Cars founder Tom Baker takes a deep dive to find out.
