On May 29, 2023, VPL hosted a conversation between Frances Haugen and Taylor Owen, on the challenges and opportunities for Canada in holding Big Tech accountable.
-- Description from event listing below --
In Canada, Big Tech is the only sector exempt from product safety standards. While other countries have begun rolling out policies and legislation aimed at addressing the safety and privacy concerns of Big Tech, Canada is lagging behind.
During her time at Big Tech company Facebook (now Meta), Frances Haugen became increasingly alarmed by the choices the company makes in prioritizing their own profits over public safety. As a last resort and at great personal risk, Frances made the decision to blow the whistle on Facebook. The initial reporting that exposed this was done by the Wall Street Journal in what became known as “The Facebook Files”.
Join a discussion with Frances Haugen about the challenges and opportunities for Canada in holding Big Tech accountable. She will appear in conversation with Taylor Owen, the Beaverbrook Chair in Media, Ethics and Communications and the founding Director of The Centre for Media, Technology and Democracy at McGill University.
