This is my senior chihuahua having a neurological episode. He had two previous episodes weeks apart but they were not this severe. Initial diagnosis was ataxia. MRI was inconclusive. Neurologist's theory is that the episodes are vascular in nature and my dog is possibly having strokes. This episode was the result of one of the strokes. He fully recovered from this within a couple of days. It was a gradual recovery with his balance returning more and more with each passing few hours.
As of May 2016, my dog has not had any other episodes. He is not on any medication (other than Interceptor for heartworm prevention) and takes a fish oil supplement from Nordic Naturals. His estimated age is 16-18.
Chachi passed away on June 12, 2017 from complications from kidney disease/failure.
