I love something that can be planted in the fall and harvested in the next year. If you’re into no-work gardening, this is it! A few days ago, I planted my shallots and thought I should do a quick video about it!

Shallots are planted in late fall when the ground is cooler. Planting at this time of the year gives them a boost in the spring for a more fruitful yield.
- I always start with a fresh layer of compost. Compost adds nutrients and helps keep a rich but well-draining soil.
- Inspect the seed shallots and remove any rotten ones.
- Plant the shallots 4-6 inches deep so the top point of the shallot is approximately 1 inch below the soil. Leave 4-6 inches apart on all sides.
- Mulch with shredded leaves to help retain moisture and suppress weeds.
- Leave until ready to harvest in late spring or early summer!
