Can economic growth be sustained in a finite natural world? In general, humans have been able to find solutions to scarcity of natural resource commodities, especially in response to price signals. In more recent years, however, a greater emphasis has been placed on non-market services provided by the environment, which do not have inherent price signals. While technological progress has helped alleviate commodity scarcity, resource amenities have become scarcer, and it is unlikely that technology alone can solve the issue of increasing amenity scarcity.
