The United Kingdom has come under fire from the Nigerian government over Britain’s decision to restrict foreign travel from the West African country and suspend the issuance of short-stay visas from Nigeria.
Britain announced the restriction on foreign travel originating from Nigeria due to what it said were Omicron COVID-19 cases linked to travellers from the country.
However, the Nigerian government has condemned the travel restrictions, describing them as unwarranted, discriminatory and not science-based.
Similarly, UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, described the travel ban imposed by the West on African countries as “travel apartheid”.
Ironically, the UK issued a clarification on Monday, saying visa applications in other categories such as for persons who wish to study, work or live permanently in Britain, will continue to be processed.
However, many have accused the UK of cherry picking the kind of visas to issue to travellers from Nigeria, arguing that the issuance of student and work visas will solely benefit the British economy.
In this interview, Prof. #EghosaOsaghae, Director General of the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, discusses what may blow up into a diplomatic spat and how this could affect the age-long relationship between Nigeria and Britain.
