The votes are being tallied for the byelections in Uttar Pradesh's Rampur and Khatauli assembly districts, as well as the prominent Mainpuri Lok Sabha seat. Dimple Yadav is leading by narrow margin of 1400 votes so far from Mainpuri. In each of the three locations, there is a direct conflict between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Samajwadi Party (SP) and its partner Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD). The Samajwadi Party founder Mulayam Singh Yadav's death required a by-election for the Mainpuri seat, which saw a high-stakes race, while veteran SP leader Azam Khan's disqualification left the Rampur Sadar seat empty. Dimple Yadav, the wife of Akhilesh Yadav, the SP leader and Mulayam Singh Yadav's older daughter-in-law, is running for the SP in Mainpuri, the family's pocket borough. On the other hand, Mulayam's brother Shivpal Singh Yadav's old confidant and candidate for the BJP is Raghuraj Singh Shakya. Asim Raja, an ally of Azam Khan, is running for office in Rampur Sadar, while Rajkumari Saini, the wife of Vikram Singh Saini, is running in Khatauli, which was the epicentre of the 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots.
