At a joint news conference after his meeting with China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Berlin on September 1, 2020, German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas urged Beijing to withdraw the national security law it has imposed on Hong Kong. Maas also asked Wang to grant international observers access to the Uygur minority group in China’s Xinjiang autonomous region. Wang rejected foreign interference, insisting that both the Hong Kong and Xinjiang issues were China's internal affairs.
