The Château de Pierrefonds is a castle situated in the commune of Pierrefonds in the Oise département (Picardy) of France. It is on the southeast edge of the Forest of Compiègne, northeast of Paris, between Villers-Cotterêts and Compiègne.
The Château de Pierrefonds includes most of the specific characteristics of defensive military architecture from the Middle Ages with great views of the area, fortressed towers and thick walls. A major restoration was done in the 19th century.
The Pierrefonds Castle is located in the French commune of Pierrefonds, about 80 km away from Paris. Its geographical situation on the side of the Compiègne Forest perfectly correlates with its impressive architecture and turns it into a truly enchanting place to find yourself in.
The castle was initially built back in the Middle Ages, sometime around the 12th century. At the end of the 14th century, King Charles VI gave it to his brother – Louis, the Duke of Orléans – who reassembled it and resided there until the end of his life. Unfortunately, the Medieval version of The Pierrefonds Castle was almost completely demolished during the 17th century. It remained no more than a beautiful ruin until Napoleon III decided to reconstruct it once again and adopt it as his imperial residence.
Touring the Pierrefonds Castle
Nowadays, The Pierrefonds Castle is a historical monument that offers all-year-round access for tourists from all over the world. There are various ways to experience the place – a self-guided tour with a personal booklet, a professionally-guided tour, a lecture tour (that needs to be previously booked), or an audio-guide tour.
The visits usually last about an hour and take you along several parts of the castle, including the chapel, the ceremonial room, the dungeon, and the covered way.
One of the best things about the castle is that it offers free entrance for all EU citizens and residents under the age of 26. It is also fully accessible for people with reduced mobility, has a free smartphone charging station, and a unique in-house boutique bookshop.
In the 12th century, a castle was built on this site. Two centuries later, in 1392, King Charles VI turned the County of Valois into a Duchy and gave it to his brother Louis, Duke of Orléans.
The castle is featured in several popular movies - The man with the Iron Mask, Three Musketeers featuring Leonardo DiCaprio, John Malkovich, Jeremy Irons and it is one of the most famous French Castles.
