Project 6-25 visited USG at the Chemelot site. During our interview with Eric Bloemen of USG, we got some in-depht insights in the energy efficiency solution they've implemented: flue gas heat recovery.

USG – Eric Bloemen
USG is the utilities supplier of industrial park Chemelot. USG has an afterburner with a lot of residual heat from flue gases (160 °C with a flow of 240,000 kg / hour). The flue gases of USG still contained a lot of energy and are corrosive in nature. The motivation to implement this technology was to reduce costs as well as to reduce the Carbon Footprint of utilities. But corrosive flue gas from the incinerator seemed like a showstopper for heat recovery. In collaboration with Heatmatrix, a polymer economiser was installed as a by-pass to the existing flue gas duct.

In this case we discuss how the project came about, which barriers stood in the way of realization and how they were overcome. Finally, he gives tips and suggestions to other asset owners.
