In Part 5, I leave the main Savant Lake/River, and do the portage over a sub-watershed height of land into the headwaters of the Little Savant Lake and river system. The portage was not filmed, but it's a steep climb from a swamp, up over a high rock ridge (key map shown). No campsites were found on Little Savant Lake, but just inside the river I found a beauty rock barren natural campsite that I "made" with tent rocks and fire rocks. Lots of easy firewood, and blueberries everywhere, which I show at the end of the video. I love camping on open rock barrens. I show how I use tent pegs as jam cleats when rigging a tent on bedrock.
This is Part 5 of my 17-day solo canoe trip in northwestern Ontario boreal forest back country, August 2013. The next parts to come in the series will show my canoe trip explorations down the wild rice lined Little Savant River, which is seldom traveled. I hope you enjoy it, and thanks for watching.
