In this video I run through a tear down and upgraded build-up of the internals of a S3.46 BMW 188mm Medium Case Limited Slip Differential for my E28.
This is also applicable for E30, E24, and E23 medium case LSD's - output flanges and differential covers will vary.
This was an area I was having trouble finding other visual content on, so though I know this isn’t the most amazing technical video, I hope the presentation and on-screen info can help other BMW people feel confident in a job theyre about to tear into. Honestly this was not a bad job at all, it just took a little patience and prep.
Although parts of the spider gears could have been replaced, keep that in mind for your work in that you may find worn out metal that would make noise in the future. Luckily the main noise issue in bad bearings/races was not the case for me, so I sealed mine up for another lifecycle.
I do the "add a clutch" upgrade from Thayer Motorsports/Bimmerdiffs, for more lockup:
(Just like that it's not currently offered anymore :[ - will keep the link up in case they come back)
