The 1990s were heady times for Girard-Perregaux and Ferrari, and the Girard-Perregaux Ferrari Chronograph 8020 embodies the best of both.
Truth be told, the marriage of Girard-Perregaux and Ferrari came about as a result of a friendship between two friends and purveyors of high-performance machinery; Luigi Macaluso of Girard-Perregaux, and Luca Cordero di Montezmolo of Ferrari.
These long-time acquaintances forged the first-ever high horology co-branding for the most valuable brand name in motor sports. As one of the few shining starts of the 1990s luxury watch market to have emerged undimmed, the Girard-Perregaux Ferrari watches are becoming recognized collector's pieces.
The Girard-Perregaux Ferrari Chronograph 8020 is the undisputed poster boy for the G-P Ferrari partnership. It was the most visible, most coveted, and most recognizable sports chronograph in new watch showrooms across Grunge-era America.
Even the vaunted Rolex Daytona stubbled to compete with this one for sheer panache. And it's still a thoroughbred.
The lacquered blue "Scuderia" dial is the star of the show on the Ferrari Chronograph. Its gloss surface is immaculate, even, and rich. The famed "prancing horse" is rampant at twelve o'clock. G-P's subtle use of recessed sub-dials, high-contrast white features, and fine matching Arabic numerals demonstrates an eye for detail and impeccable taste.
Girard-Perregaux provides a caliber 2280 "engine" to power its "Ferrari." Based on a thin and fine automatic ETA 2892-A2 base and a Dubois-Depraz 2021 chronograph module, the 2280 is a smooth and capable movement with durability to match.
As a longtime manufacturer of in-house cases and bracelets, Girard-Perregaux boasts the know how to craft a mean stainless steel "chassis" for Maranello's finest. The 38mm case features excellent detailing, brushed and polished contrasts, and a short curved lugs that provide excellent fit. On the wrist, the three-link bracelet is supple, fluid, and never pulls hairs.
During the 1994-2004 marriage of Ferrari and Girard-Perregaux, the Italian marque won five Formula One Driver's titles with Michael Schumacher and six Constructor's titles for the factory museum. G-P, for its part, ascended to the summit of high horology and counted such esteemed etablisseurs as Vacheron Constantin, Cartier, and Gerald Genta among its customers.
