On Sunday 8 March, 71 Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) specialists from New Zealand’s three taskforces gathered in Auckland to begin their final test for international external classification as a heavy USAR team.
Over 3 days, the team were put through their paces in Palmerston North, observed by a group of classifiers from all over the world who scored their capability in a number of skills.
These final exercises were the culmination of a huge financial and training investment over 2 years for our USAR teams. The classifiers delivered the successful verdict on the Wednesday afternoon following the test.
