(7 Feb 2019) JULIETTE BINOCHE ON WEINSTEIN: 'I WANT TO SEE PEACE TO HIS MIND AND LET JUSTICE DO WHAT IT NEEDS TO DO.'
Juliette Binoche says "we shouldn't forget" that Harvey Weinstein "was a great producer."
Speaking at the jury press conference on the opening day of the Berlin International Film Festival, the French actress, who worked with the movie mogul on a number of occasions, said she wanted "to see peace to his mind and let justice do what it needs to do."
"I almost want to say peace to his mind and heart, that's all, you know? Because he, you know I'm trying to put my feet in his shoes. He had enough I think. And a lot of people expressed themselves and now I think we have to, you know, justice has to do its work. A lot of people... I expressed myself. I never had, you know, problems with him. I could see he had problems but as a producer he was wonderful most of the time."
Binoche is jury president at this year's festival, which she hopes will address some pressing issues in the world today.
"A lot of rich countries are closing their borders and also with the, you know, with the climate changes there are a lot of questions happening and urgencies and so I hope that we can, I don't know what the discussions are going to be, but they are very much in my mind at the moment as a responsibility for future generations that we need to do something and I'm amazed to see how governments are not really working as seriously as they should."
The 69th edition of the German festival, which is the last that will be directed by Dieter Kosslick, is also addressing gender equality.
"This is not only courageous but a stepping forward moment that Dieter Kosslick has created," said jury member, producer Trudie Styler.
"41 percent women directors are in the main competition this year. So I say hats off to Berlin and hats off to Dieter Kosslick for the courage that Berlin has always shared with the world," she said.
Other jury members include film critic Justin Chang, actress Sandra Huller, director Sebastian Lelio and film curator Rajendra Roy.
The Festival kicks off with the premiere of Danish director Lone Scherfig's "The Kindness of Strangers."
