I was the AGCO rep for southwest Missouri in the 1990's, and one of the dealerships I called on was Welters Farm Supply in Verona, Missouri. The Welters family were a White Tractor dealer, and also traveled all over North America finding old Minneapolis, Oliver and White Tractors to purchase and dismantle for parts in their salvage operation. I've never met anyone in my life with a bigger passion for tractors, but especially the Minneapolis-Moline brand, than practically everyone in the family.
One day, Ed, the owner of the business, told me he had something he wanted to show me. He took me out in a back building and there was, what very well could be the rarest tractor ever built, a Minny-Mo UDLX. I was astounded.
If you're a tractor enthusiast, you may know a little bit about this model, I'd rate it in the top ten most innovative and eye-catching tractors ever built. It was basically a 1938 52 hp cab tractor, made before anyone had seriously considered a cab to be a possibility.
The front end, to me, resembles a 1934 Ford, or other cars of that vintage. It has a tractor engine, a cab that you enter from the rear, and big tractor wheels on the back. Minneapolis-Moline only made 150 of them, there can't be too many left in existence, but Ed Welters had one.
The tractor was purchased in the 80's at a farm sale in Colorado. One of the Welters was traveling out west and happened to read a sale bill in a restaurant that had the UDLX on it. He made plans to attend, bought the tractor, and hauled it back to Missouri.
It's not perfect, there are dents in the front fenders and the cab glass is gone, but otherwise it's complete, it wouldn't take very long to restore. It runs, the Welters family get it out and take it to an occasional Christmas parade or tractor pull, most of the time it stays under an open building at their place, with other lesser unique tractors.
I'm doing a series of videos about bringing an old Oliver back to life, and as part of that, traveled to Welters Farm Supply to get parts and I had to ask if the UDLX was still around. The family assured me it was still there and wasn't going anywhere, the tractor is not for sale.
As I was leaving I took one last look at the UDLX and wondered how cool it would be to go down the road in the tractor and what reaction it must get when taken out and shown to the public. They probably don't know that they're looking at arguably the rarest tractor ever built that was somewhere around 40 years ahead of its time.
