People who catastrophize can benefit from this behavior in one of three ways. First, it slightly lessens the sting of the pain if the worst-case scenario actually comes true. It’s a way of dissociating from emotional pain that comes. Secondly, it gives you the sense that you are controlling the outcome. If you predict that you’re not getting that job offer, then you’re supposedly in control. Lastly, dwelling on worst-case scenarios releases you from taking any responsibility for the course of your life. If your catastrophe actually happens, then you can blame the universe or the stars for all of the negative things you predicted. After all, what could you do about it if you were destined to fail? You lose accountability and empowerment for how your life plays out. Catastrophizing is a coping mechanism that keeps you from the ability to hope, feel joy, or see yourself as a capable being. Learn to get comfortable with feedback and disappointments, and see yourself as able to pivot when you come across disappointments and challenges.
