The number of refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs) worldwide has now surpassed 68 million, with no end in sight. Global instability, wars, famine and extreme nationalism have all contributed to this crisis. A new approach is needed.
The World Refugee Council’s report — A Call to Action: Transforming the Global Refugee System — provides solutions for major overhaul of the global refugee system in four key areas:
1) Political will: To bring about positive change, politicians must resist exploiting xenophobic fears for the sake of short-term political gain. True leadership entails the protection of the most vulnerable and disenfranchised populations.
2) Accountability: The international community needs to hold those responsible for causing displacement to account.
3) Funding: Year after year, millions of dollars in pledges go unfulfilled. The status quo of voluntary donations is unacceptable. New and innovative financing methods are needed.
4) Governance: While no single organization or group is able to solve this crisis alone, the World Refugee Council envisions the creation of a Global Action Network for the Forcibly Displaced.
