Re: Poll = Head. This is the literal definition, but it's argued that it means hammer within context. Be it that the poll of an axe is the back face, or possibly the face of a hammer. Other interpretations believe it's an indication of the axe's target. An axe for striking the head. Pollaxes were also known as Mordagst in German - Murder Axe. They could also simply be called axes, hache, azza, etc. across several languages without any greater specificity, even if it doesn't have an axe head as we'd understand it today.
