Dermestid flesh-eating beetles, also called carrion beetles, are scavengers that feast on dead animals and decompose their bodies back into the earth. Taxidermists (like me!) use beetles to help create professionally cleaned skulls and game mounts. The beetles consume flesh and soft tissues like cartilage which is the first step in the bone cleaning process before degreasing and whitening.
Beetles go through a process of metamorphosis very similar to a butterfly. When they first hatch from an egg, the larvae look sort of like a caterpillar. As they grow they will shed their exoskeletons (the white ones have recently shed their skin) and form a new one. Eventually the larvae crawl underground and build a cocoon where they transform into an adult beetle. When they're ready, they hatch out and crawl to the surface.
