For the first time in Japan, sales of adult diapers have exceeded those for babies. The country experienced another record low birth rate last year, and projections suggest that in less than 50 years, 40% of the population will be over 65.
Last year, diaper manufacturer OG Holdings announced it would stop producing baby nappies to concentrate on adult ones. Another company reported that its revenue from adult diaper sales is already double that of baby diapers.
This phenomenon isn't limited to Japan. Birth rates are declining worldwide, and The Lancet's research indicates that by 2050, more than three-quarters of the world's nations will have fertility rates too low to maintain their population sizes over time.
