Sitting down with Marine Ecologist Emily Gregory, Reacting to Footage of Iceberg A23a, the largest iceberg in the world.
A23a is the world’s largest iceberg and is now on the move. This iceberg is approximately 4,000 sq km, making it 3x the size of New York City. It originally broke off the Antarctic Coast in 1986, and has been stuck on the bottom of the Weddell Sea ever since. It is now moving in the Antarctic circumpolar current.
Emily Gregory is a Marine Ecologist with a research focus on photogrammetry and bioenergetics of baleen whales. She has worked in coastal and marine research endeavours of migratory species across remote corners of the globe. She spends much of her time following the migrations of the world’s baleen whales through the coastlines of South America, Tonga, Alaska, Hawai’i, Antarctica and Australia.
Working closely with migratory marine species imparted a greater understanding of how intrinsically connected our ocean and climate are and instilled a passion in Emily for the importance of our polar regions, the ‘engine rooms’ of the earth’s climate.
Emily is a true believer in conscious travel, guiding others to learn, protect, and explore with purpose by respecting the balance of mother nature and connecting communities to place, land and ocean.
When getting close to A23a, katabatic winds come off the ice plateau and the air and sea temperatures drop. Due to several factors, including the amount of cold fresh water coming from this massive block of ice sitting in the ocean, there is a localised upwelling of nutrient-rich seawater. This causes an influx of wildlife–including a massive amount of whale feeding opportunistically around the ice island.
Travelling in the Antarctic circumpolar current A23a is now heading towards the Southern Ocean.
