Sophie Aylmer, Head of Farm Animals and Nutrition Policy at FOUR PAWS, explains the trifecta of issues caused by intensive animal farming: animal suffering, environmental pollution and global warming.
Some facts:
🌍 77% of the world’s agricultural land used on the planet is used for livestock-related farming,
🐄 Animal agriculture alone makes up 78% of all agricultural methane emissions
🌱 Almost half (45%) of animal agriculture-related emissions are caused by the production and processing of animal feed such as grass and feed crops.
🐔 92.2 billion farmed land animals are used for food (meat, milk, and eggs) every year globally. About 74% of them (around 68 billion) are estimated to be kept in factory farming conditions.
The way we farm is not good for animals nor the planet.
The solution: making sure policymakers enable and reward farmers for moving away from intensive farming to extensive, outdoor farming models that value animals for their role in the ecosystem.
